Rex Tangle was born in 1965 in a small town in France near the Swiss and German border. His first exposure to rock music was when he was only 2 days old. His father took his bouncing baby boy and positioned speakers on each side of the crib. Then he cranked the Rolling Stones' song "Satisfaction". Talk about a warm welcome to this world. By the age of three, he expressed his interest in music by playing everything he would hear on the radio, on his dad's piano, using one finger.
His musical ear was so good that it eventually led him into trouble. During a piano lesson he was supposed to have learned a song for homework, and instead of reading the music sheet, Rex learned how to play it by listening to a record. The next day, when his teacher had him perform it, she was initially amazed at his playing skill until she forgot to turn the page of his music book, and found out that he wasn't reading at all. Rex never did learn how to read music, but he can still whip out a mean tune (although he uses all ten fingers now), all by ear. Later in life, at age 10, after listening to the English band Status Quo, he wanted to play the electric guitar. And so began the future of Rex Tangle's musicianship.
In his early teens, Rex joined a fairly popular French rock band, Copie Conforme, and even did a few dates as the opening act with The Police during their European Synchronicity tour in 1983. Being so young, it was quite an experience for Rex. After the tour, Rex decided to fulfill a childhood dream of going to Africa. He bought a one way ticket to Senegal and spent a year crossing the plains on foot. He had many amazing adventures, some good, some bad, but they all build character. Rumors circulated in France that he had died due to his disappearance, and when he finally made it back to civilization after walking for a year, it pretty much looked like he had.
Unfortunately when Rex returned home, he found out that he was due for his French mandatory military service, and wanting nothing to do with the matter, Rex had to leave town quickly. He had no idea of where to go and believe it or not, he spun a globe, closed his eyes, and swore he'd go wherever his finger landed. As the universe would have it, his index finger landed on Chicago, Illinois. Imagine what would've happened if his finger would've ended up in the middle of the Pacific Ocean !
Given his fate, the nineteen year old Rex packed a few suitcases, a guitar, and his cat Ophelia and flew off to Chicago not knowing much English (most of it was from rock songs). Once he arrived in the U.S. he found himself overwhelmed with dispair. With the $40 bucks that was in his pocket that was all he had left to his name, he decided to get drunk, and headed to the airport bar. A man sat next to him and was able to offer Rex a job fixing standalone video games using hand signals. Rex moved into his garage, learned English watching David Letterman, and learned to become a video game repairman.
He settled into his new surroundings, went through many jobs and began to play music again when he knew enough english to converse. He went through many bands, and many gigs, all with very different styles. From Rock to Jazz to Ethnic. Even had the Smashing Pumpkins open for one band Big Blue Picture with the fabulous J.J. Tindall on drums at an art opening. One band, Cassandra's Certain seemed to be doing very well. They decided they'd hit the "big time" and packed their bags and moved to Los Angeles with star lust dreams. With the way these things go, they never did get signed and it wasn't long before the band was in shambles. The drummer David Suycott went on to play with Stabbing Westward and then Machines of Loving Grace, the singer Geri Soriano went on to sing for the Supreme Beings of Leisure, and the other two guys, well, Rex hasn't heard from them in a while...
Once again in new territory, Rex staked his claim in more bands and more gigs, he even did session work for a while. He somehow got himself into training animals for movies and had many adventures. One time when there was a brush fire near the animal compound, Rex had to do his share of taking the animals to safety. He spent that night with a lion, a wolf, and an orangutan in a small guest house somewhere in the Valley. Trying to hide the three of them from his over-protective no-pets landlord/neighbor was no simple task either. Telling her that the lion roar was "nothing" wasn't easy, but it was L.A. and she bought it, 'cause anything can happen there.
In Los Angeles, Rex joined the English band Zebra Crossing, and they were really beginning to get somewhere. Sold out shows on the Sunset Strip, a good following, even label interest. Spending four to five hours a day rehearsing with 4 other guys was turning into a marriage made in hell, and when the rest of the band decided to pack up and go back to England Rex said "Bon Voyage". He wasn't going go that ill fated route again.
Given Rex Tangle's uncanny bad luck with being in bands, he decided to make a change, and he became his own musical entourage. Soon to follow, he purchased enough basic equipment to create his own home studio. Originating from a four track cassette deck, a guitar, a bass, and borrowed drum machines & keyboards Rex began to compose his first tunes, alone. The studio has grown by leaps and bounds over the years, more guitars, his own keyboards and effects, and even made it to the 21st century with digital recording. It's an ever consuming collection of instruments and there's always something else Rex just has to have but, he's finally happy with his music. A one man band, creating song after song, with an ecclectic vision of music. The result is a mixture of different styles, mostly instrumental, with the exception of a couple of songs with lyrics or loops. If you don't like one tune, listen to the next one!
Rex Tangle is currently hiding somewhere in the U.S. with his Las Vegas Wedding wife, living up the American Dream, keeping a day job, perfecting his music, and trying to take over the internet music scene by storm.
